Is anyone able to explain the location set codes used in volleyball? I know that a (#1) is a high outside set, but what about all the others? Does anyone know of a web sit with a good diagram to show all these setting areas?
Thanks,

That's a good diagram I think
Well... I have been playing since I was 8 and I'm on munciana (aka one of the best in the country) 15s now
4- high outside (4 zone)
3 in between middle and outside (4 zone 3 zone seam)
2-middle (3 zone)
1 or A- quick middle (3 zone)
9-backset (2 zone)
Pipe- middle back (6 zone)
Jack- right back (1 zone)
Row- left back (5 zone)
I use a 5 as high outside a 4 is a shoot set outside a 2 is high
Middle a 1 is quick middle a C is a back set hit by middle hitter a J is also a back set hit bymiddle but is further outside a 9 is a back set hit by your weakside hitter (same as J just different hitter) my back row hits are all colors just for fun or could be double digits like10 or 21.
4-high outside left
2-between middle and left front
8-Quick set between middle and left front
3-Middle
1-Quick Middle
2-if Right side calls this, outside to them
9-inside to right hitter
Red-Left back
White-Middle back
Blue-right back
My coach gave me a paper with all the USA sets that they run here is most of them:
LEFT SIDE SETS:
Go - very fast and low set
Hut - fast but not as low as a go, near the top of the antenna
4 - high set, above attena
MIDDLE SETS:
Gap or 31 - in between the left and middle blockers
1 - on top of setters shoulder, right above the tape, very fast and low
2 - normal high middle set, two or three feet away from setter
A - right behind setter, like a 1 (can also be hit by the right side hitter)
B - about six feet behind setter, between right and middle blockers
Slide or wave - like a normal back set, but all the way to the antenna
RIGHT SIDE SETS:
A - like a middle 1 but behind the setter
Red - a fast set (like a hut)
5 - slow and high set (like a 4)
BACK ROW SETS:
(all back row sets should be 9-10 feet off the net)
Bic - to middle back, lower set
Pipe - to middle back, higher set
A - to left back, on the outside line, high set
B - to left back, two or three feet inside the court, high set
C - to right back, two or three feet inside the court, high set
D - to right back, on the outside line, high set
(most times teams make up other names for these sets, like: blue, white, green, and pink)
Hope this helps, and I haven't run all these sets, the high sets are the ones you usually start with, and use most of your volleyball career)
Set placement theory comes from an old grid system. Most people know the shortcut names of the sets, but not the original grid. The grid works like this:
1st number: Placement From Left Antenna (1) to Right Antenna (9) divided into 9 sections (Setter btwn 5&6)
2nd number: Height of the set where 1 is a quickset and 5 is the highest.
So a 15 is a Outside High set, but is often just called a "5"
A "32" and "31" still retain the original grid names, with the 3 being btwn outside & middle, 31 being a shoot/low set, and 32 being only slightly higher.
Common Sets and Shortcut Names
OH 15 = "5" (High Outside Set)
14 = "4" (Slightly Lower High Outside Set)
32 = "32" (Faster Inside Set to OH halfway btwn O&M)
11 = "SHOOT" (Fast Low Set all the way to Outside Antenna)
Anyone 52 = "2" (Short Middle Set, can be hit by OH, M or RS)
M 31 = "31" (Shoot Set to MH halfway btwn O&M)
51 = "1" (Fastest/Shortest Middle Set Hit just out of setter's hands)
92 = "Slide" (Low, fast backset to antenna chased down by MH)
M or RS 61 = "6" or "Back 1" (Shortest Back Set hit by MH/RS just out of S hands)
RS 72 = "7" or "Back 2" (Slightly higher Back Set)
84 = "8" (High Back Set)
95 = "9" (Highest Back Set)
I have a grid but don't know how to post the image, it's not online.
How to signal the set number to the spiker using hand? Please help me...
