Hello--

Let me start by letting you know that I am a complete plumbing idiot. Rather, I'm simply a homeowner whom, when attempting to open up a wall, encountered a huge drain pipe from the bathroom above. I could work with what is there but I'm hoping to open the wall up more, which would require the pipe to be moved sideways about a foot. Is this something that can be done? Is it difficult? Will it cost me a fortune to have it changed? My husband is very handy--could he do it for us?

Your advice is appreciated!

Tell me is the pipe black plastic, black metal pipe or white plastic pipe... that will determine correct answer to your question.

Plastic is obviously easier to work with... whatever color. Black metal pipe (cast iron) would probably require a professional to do the work.

If Plastic, your husband may be able to offset pipe himself... but needs to be careful that any pipes he cuts into are well supported from above (and maybe even supported from below.. need more info.) before he ever cuts into a main sewer stack... so... even plastic is involved and can be dangerous if proper steps are not followed.

NOTE HERE.. that we are glad to talk you guys through it if you want.. but first.. why cut into wall and move pipe... what are you gaining.. Just curious.. Get back.. let us know... Mark

Thanks for your reply. I'm actually pretty sure the pipe is steel. The house was built in 1971.

We are opening up a wall between a kitchen and a family room. Currently, it's just a pass through. I'll snap some photos tomorrow.
