    OPT --> H1 taxes
    Hi,

    I was on OPT (F1 student) from 22-Dec-06 to 21-Dec-07. My H1-B visa starts from 1-Oct-07.
    - Do I have to pay federal taxes from 1-Jan-07 to 21-Dec-07,since I was on OPT?
    - Do I have to pay federal taxes from 1-Oct-2007 to 21-Dec-07, since I was on H1B?
    - My employer has not deducted the federal taxes starting from 1-Oct-07 as my H1B visa started, as my OPT was still valid. Do I have to pay the federal tax for these 3 months?

    Thanks
    Neeraj

    Yes, you DO have to pay federal AND state income taxes for ALL of the time you worked and earned a salary.

    However, you were EXEMPT from Social Security and Medicare taxes while your F-1 visa was in effect. That exemption ENDED on 1 October 2007, when you H-1B visa went into effect.
