    Partial Resident Taxes
    Hello~
I have filed my federal taxes, however I am not sure how to go about doing my state taxes. I lived in NYC and had two jobs from January through February in NY state. I then got a job in CT from March through the present (and no longer worked in NY). I lived in NYC and commuted through July, and have been living in CT since then. I have been told I therefore need to be considered a partial resident to both states. Any advice on how to do this? Is there a separate form for partial residents? Thank you! -Nicole

    Yes - you are:

    1) a part year resident of NYC from Jan - July
    2) a CT non-resident worker from March - July
    3) a CT resident from July - Dec.

You should complete the CT non-resident tax form first, for the period when you lived in NYC and worked in CT - form CT-1040NR/PY. Then complete the NY State (and City) form: IT-203, including IT-122-R (taxes paid to other jurisdictions) and IT-203-ATT, which gives you credit for income tax paid to CT while you were a resident of NY - your tax bill to NY State and City should pretty much be limited to what you owe for your work there in Jan and Feb. Finally, re-do the CT return to include the period of July - Dec. Because the CT form is used for both non-resident and part-year residents, you should be careful to determine separately how much tax you owe CT for your non-resident period, because that's the amount you get credit for on your NY taxes, not the full-year CT taxes. Hope that's clear.
