My daughter-in-law does not watch my grandsons ages 7 and 5 carefully enough. She was looking at the menu at a restaurant and my grandson ran off. She had no idea where. He was later found in restroom, the most dangerous place. My daughter-in-law takes no responsibility. What can I do to help keep my grandchildren safe?

I'm sorry, but I would need a LOT more examples to worry about your daughter-in-laws parenting skills. Children, especially boys, of that age do tend to get into trouble. Short of tying them down, things like that can happen.

I think you need to lighten up and maybe try to help her more, by acting as another set of eyes and hands when she has to take them out. Try offering your help and advice, but not in a judgemental way.

It doesn't seem to me that there is much wrong with your daughter in law from what info you provide here. I agree with scott, boys will be boys, and it is very hard to keep one of them from going to the bathroom without permission, what with the other young child, ordering, talking to you, etc. As far as bathrooms go, I don't understand how they are "the most dangerous place." I mean unless you're afraid he'll drown or something. Maybe at a truck stop there would be some cause for concern, but in what I assume is a decent restaurant, not very many child predators go there and camp out in the bathroom hoping a young boy will wander in without his daddy. They go to parks and maybe chuck-e-cheese. At any rate, this isn't anything I would expect someone like social service to bat an eye at, so my advice is to not worry so much about it. Heck if she's kept them alive for 7 years, she must not be a complete screw up. Best of luck.
