Hi all, I am fairly new to this but thought it would be incredibly handy for other people's insights into this matter. Now the we have 5 cats, three are no problem [the older ones] but in the past few months, our now 8 months old kittens have developed issues with the litter trays. 2 of the older cats are actually their brother and mummy :o [You would think they behave haha] We mastered litter training but it all seems to be going pear shaped. The male kitten will only use the tray about 80-90% of the time for his poops and now the female kitten has recently started to wee in the cat bed!! Now we have 3 trays bewteen them all and they are cleaned regularly. The issue was worse as the male would poo in 2 different rooms but now only one. We our at our wits end and can't figure out what has gone wrong and are a bit disturbed by the female peeing in the bed. Both are spayed and neutered. Please Help! Thanks x

My friends cat does the same but poos in their bed and on their duvet and pillows,and in the bath and his cat bed but that only started when they started working a lot more and he was getting less attention than usual,has their been any changes in the house??

Have they been going outside? They could be marking their territory if they have

Could also be worms that can make them not use the litter tray

Try getting another tray they might like weeing in one tray and pooing in another

Try getting alitter tray which is covered mycat hated people watching him and wouldn't go if sum1 was in the room then he would poo sumwere else,try moving the litter tray they mite not like were it is

If it continues take them to the vets to make sure theirs not aproblem

You probably aren't going to like hearing this, but what I have heard is that you should always have a number of litter pans equal to the number of cats plus one. I'd say that your problem is probably either that the kittens (and possibly some of the other cats... unless you see who is doing it, don't rule them out) find the cleanliness of the litter boxes to be below their standard, or else the older cats are claiming them and keeping the younger ones from using them. You say that you clean them "regularly". Does that mean daily, twice a day, weekly? If you are already doing daily, I'd up the frequency to twice daily and see if that fixes the problem.

If adding more litter boxes or cleaning them more frequently doesn't fix the problem, then we move to the next likelihood. How big is your house? It's possible that you are reaching the limit of the number of cats that you can handle in that area, and are running into some territorial disputes. In that case, you are limited in your options. Either you have to create more territory (either by actually adding rooms, by screening in a porch, for example, or by going vertical with more cat trees and shelves, etc.) or you will need to consider lowering the number of cats by finding good homes for some of them. If it is a territorial dispute, it will get worse as the kittens get older and the mother cat tries to drive them away as she would in the wild. So keep an eye out for that.
