    Ear mites
My dog's been having a presistent problem with ear mites. We've taken her to the vet all the time and has been given yeast infection medicine and pesticide, but nothing works. The vets (we've gone to two) don't seem to help. The first one didn't even mention anything about ear mites and the second said there are ear mites and explained what and how they work.

Now, it's getting to be too expensive to keep visiting the vet... we were going just about once a month to fix the problem. Is there anything else we can do? Is there any suggestions on other methods of curing this problem?

    Thanks!

Do the ears have a smell? A simple ear mite infestation generally will not smell. Yeast and bacterial infections have pretty distinctive odors. They can occur alone or secondary to ear mites. Do the medicines work for a while and then the problem comes back, or do they not work at all? Some dogs are just prone to them (Dogs with long heavy ears where the air can't circulate, like Bassets, or those with lots of hair in the ear canals, like Poodles, are especially bad.) These things can be a pain in the neck to keep under control. I would call the vet back and tell him that the problem is back or never went away; see if he recommends a longer duration of treatment or if there is a different medication you could try. It may just be a matter of finding the right medicine for this particular dog.
