What do I file for j-1 visa tax return?
    Dear tax experts

I worked in the USA last 2007 winter for 3 months with a j-1 visa. I would like to know what forms I need to file to IRS so I can get my refund, or if its not case, to pay the amount I owe to them. Im am non dependent and don't have anyone who depends on me (child, etc).

Also, when I file this return, who do I know if I have a debt with the IRS or if they owe me?

Thank you very much for your time

You need to file as a non-resident alien, filing Form 1040NR and claiming your daily living expenses for your temporary work assignment in the U.S. by filing Form 2106 with the Form 1040NR.

I think the ability to claim the daily expenses is highly contingent on exactly what you do in your home country and whether you have a clear tax home there.
