f1 visa student tax work and study in different states, tax returns
Hi,
I am an F1 visa student. I have been in the U.S from 2006 and was on a co-op during fall 2007 for an employer in Wisconsin. The employer deducted Wisconsin taxes from my pay. During the summer I was employed in Michigan by another employer and he deducted Michigan taxes from my pay. Now, the accounting department in my school told me that I would have to pay Michigan taxes for the work I did in Wisconsin because I am a resident of Michigan (reciprocal agreement between the states) and that I should get a complete refund for my Wisconsin taxes deducted. But the Wisconsin revenue department told me that since I am on F1 visa I am a resident of my home country and that the reciprocal rule does not apply for me and that I would have to pay Wisconsin taxes. They asked me to check with the Michigan revenue dept. if I have to pay Michigan taxes or not, which I did , but haven't heard from them. So my question is do I have to pay taxes to both the states and what forms do I fill out.
Thanks
