Court appearance for theft under $5000
    Hi everyone,

I'm 19 and live in Ontario, awhile ago I was charged with theft under $5000, my court date is on April 11th, but the officer said that sometimes the first court date is only to set another time for the trial (doesn't make any sense to me) so, my question is, are there anyone familiar with this kind of matter? Why does it take 2 court dates? Other posts that I've read seemed to only have 1 court date and that was it, I'm just wondering if it would be possible that I get the court stuff done before April 25th. Because my job starts somewhere out of the province and I need to get there by around the 25th.

Thank you very much, any suggestion is appreciated.

On the first appearance you enter a plea - guilty, innocent, whatever.

Then they schedule for a hearing/trial/whatever.

Depends on the Court but in my area only traffic tickets can be disposed of in 1 court date.

Thank you very much, do you have any idea how long before the second appearance? Or does it vary depending on the area? If I get a diversion does that mean there's only 1 court date?

If you have a deal worked out you would plead quilty and normally they send you or do the sentence to the diversion.

In fact depending on how many motions you make, and other issues it can take dozens of court dates. But normally yes there are at least two.

So even if I plead guilty and work out a diversion on the first court date I would still have to go in again?

Can't answer for Canada but in my area no, you cannot work out any type of plea on the first Court appearance because you do not meet with the Assistant DA until the second appearance - the first appearance is simply to enter a plea.

The time between appearances depends on the Court calendar. I've seen it 60 days, I've seen it 7 days.
