Hi I have a 9yr old dauschund and just came from the vet. She can't stand on her feet she falls down and rolls. The vet found nothing in her x-rays. I don't know what to do next. I can't see her this way. I have to hold her to potty and she won't go. What would you do? I really can't afford for her to see a nuerologist for 7000.00. Any help would be great. I decided on the x-rays versus blood work, thinking it would be her back. Please help me. Thank you

This sounds like a balance problem more than anything else. That may be why I guess your current vet suggested the neurologist. It looks like you have a couple of very unattractive choices. As a last hope, you could try another vet. Occasionally one vet may find something another missed. Understand, I don't want to give you false hope. Some situations are just hard, with no good answer.

It have been almost 20 years since I was faced with putting down an older dog. It would be far more difficult for a dog that could have many more good years if I spent enough. People continually ask me how I can raise a puppy and then send it away to school after it is a year old. It is a snap compared to putting down an older dog. I am glad I have never been faced with such a difficult decision.

My wife and I just lost our 12 yrs old housedog Molly. She had a very, very low red blood cell count, with an enlarged spleen. The spleen showed up on an X-ray, with the low blood count showing up in the blood tests, done many months ago.
At this time, I would take her to either your Vet, or another recommended one, and have the Blood work done. Since the X-Rays didn't show a problem with her back, then I would have the blood work done, to see if there is an "imbalance" of any kind. Our dog could not stand up either, and got to the point that when I took her outside to pee or poop, I supported her with a sheet, under her chest, holding her up, like a "sling". She was just too weak to stand up, caused by the very low Red blood cell count.
Having the blood work done might tell you the cause of her weakness, and you can make decisions with the Vet from there. I did not have the money for a blood transfusion with our dog, and the Vet said it might not really make any difference in the long run.
I know the anguish, heartbreak, and loss, of a "family" member of a pet. I do wish you and she the best, and please post back with what you decide to do. I am interested in her.

It is really tough when you have to choose between the care your pet needs and eating for the next 6 months. Nothing I can say will help. It is far too common. Here is somebody else recently with the same problem.
