My husband is in horrible pain. We have a dentist appointment set for Tuesday (4 days away), but the pain meds he's taking aren't really helping. Does anyone have a suggestion to help with the pain? Druggist can recommend a topical application for the tooth pain, to get him through till his appointment. But it doesn't sound good and could be impacted tooth which means infection is building up underneath or thereabouts with no where to go. Can he go to an emerg in the meantime?

The best topical pain reliever I know is called Clove Oil. In most places it is not over the counter, but does not need a prescription. Just go to the druggist and ask for it. They have it behind the counter.

Actually, we just got the clove oil today at GNC. OTC, and the last bottle they had. I'm using grapeseed oil as a carrier oil. He's using anbesol, and already went to his doctor. I'm thinking maybe a tea bag or garlic? I know garlic has healing properties. Warm salt water? When my wisdom teeth were impacted, I could taste the infection, but he said he doesn't have that infection taste. His face isn't hot, and it only got really bad today after he brushed his teeth. I think he aggravated the exposed nerve endings. I just feel really bad because I can't do anything for him.

Warm salt water rinses should sooth the tissues. Try alternating Tylenol and Advil every 2 hours until the pain subsides. If there is an infection he will need an antibiotic. Does he have a gum boil? If he does it means there is an abscess and it's not draining which is building up pressure in the tooth. You can try to drain the abscess by breaking it and follow by using the warm salt water to rinse.

No, there isn't a boil. I'm just wondering if brushing his teeth aggravated it. I finally got him to eat some soup, and gave him an ice pack for his face which helped him go to sleep.

If he's an aggressive brusher perhaps he has abraded the enamel. Have him brush with Sensodyne (buy the original not the Sensodyne-F). It may take a few days before he feels any relief though. An ultra soft toothbrush (again Sensodyne makes a wonderful ultra soft brush) and NO scrubbing action might help too.
If he can feel a notch at the gumline with his fingernail he's either got abrasion or an abfraction (caused by clenching and grinding).

Thank you all for your answers! We're finally home. Turned out that his wisdom teeth were the problem, so they removed 3 wisdom teeth and one molar and he is SOOO much better! Luckily they had payment plans and after my insurance went through, our bill was only $486. About 1/2 of the original bill. I'm doin' a happy dance!
