how do I find the x and y intercept of an equation

The x intercept is where the function intercepts with the x axis, As the x axis is defined by the line y = 0, you can set y to 0 in your equation and then solve for x, this value of x is the x intercept.

Vice versa for the y intercept.

And keep in mind that f(x) = y. It looks confusing when written as a function. But the left side of the equal sign is essentially y. So just use a y when doing the solving part and it'll be easier.
