I have a state select hot water heater. I am all of a sudden continuously hitting the reset button (in the hot water heater), any idea what is making this happen and can I replace the braker in the hot water heater. I am assuming it isn't the element because the water does get hot, that is until the breaker switch goes off again, could it be the thermostat causing the problem? The breaker at my electric box is not shutting off, so Im sure it isn't an electrical problem in my breaker box.

YUP... the reset button is at top thermostat. If it is tripping it is because something is wrong... if you can press reset once.. go ahead. If that fixes then was a fluke and you are all set.

If that does not fix, you will need to shut electricity to water heater at the circuit breaker (confirm with a reliable electrical tester by using tester on an active circuit to confirm it works... then use on the water heater itself). When electrical confirmed off to heater just remove the top thermostat and bring to a home supply store with you and get an upper thermostat with reset buttton. Then hook back up and see from there if fixed.

See diagrams below to aid in removal/reinstallation of new thermostat. Hope this helps.

If we are talking about an electric water heater then it is very possible that an upper or lower heating element is defective and needs to be replaced.

Have someone with electrical experience check the elements... most likely one of them needs to be replaced... ;)

If one of the element in a electric water heater is defective and needs to be replaced. Would it be better to have the element replaced or get a new hot water heater?

As long as the water heater isn't leaking or super corroded, no doubt replace the element only... super easy job if someone has even basic skills and tools!

My hw heater keeps going to vacation mode. When I reset it, it fires up but shuts off after a second or two. I cleaned the igniter/sensor and the problem went away for about 6 months but now it's doing the same thing again.

Need to know the name brand and model number on plate at front center of heater... no need to post the serial number.

Also, how old is the heater? If unknown, do you have an open combustion chamber (remove door and you can reach into the combustion chamber) or a closed combustion chamber (can remove door but can't get access to the combustion chamber without removing another metal plate with a glass window in it?
