Where is the starter on a '96 Toyota Tercel located?
I got a bad starter on my Tercel and would like to replace it myself but a Chilton manual isn't available for '96, so I am hoping someone can tell me where the starter is located. Thanks

The starter is kind of hidden, under the intake manifold on the rear of the engine.

Make certain you disconnect the battery before beginning repairs.

Now, are you sure it's the starter?
Sometimes a poor connection can cause starting problems. Make certain the battery cables are clean at both ends.

Yes, the cap'n raises good ponts. Toyota starters like to give indications that it's failing before it finally does.
Read this concern from a 4runner owner a while back and see if this applies to you.
    Here's a link to it.

I know the battery cables are clean because I just had the battery replaced but I had to change out one of the terminals. I can't remember if the problem started around then or not because got a new battery, then the alternator went out all around the same time. But I know the battery is getting charged now.

What happens with the car is sometimes it starts right up, then other times it takes 3 or 4 tries. But sometimes it takes like 10-15 tries.

When it doesn't start what happens is that I turn the key hear a click but nothing happens. Plus some times it kinds of starts and almost dies but I have to hit the gas real quick and it will start right up.

So no I'm not sure it's the starter but I don't know what else it could be

Also my problem seems very close to this post and that is why I think it's a starter:
