Hampton Bay ceiling fan, 4wire (black, white, blue, green). Blue is for fan light. Fan & light are controlled by independent wall switches. Source has 4 wires (black, green, red, white). I understand the green is grounded, and the neutral are wire nut together. The black and red source are the hot wires. Does it matter which red or black source is connected to the black and blue fan wire. The instructions only give for 3 wire source. I am a first year electrical apprentice (3 months)

Well technically you DO have a "3-wire" source. The ground is assumed.

The only reason it matters is this determines which switch controls which part; fan or light.

Black from ceiling fan goes to black on fan, red from ceiling to blue on fan.
You can reverse wires at fan or switch if you want light switch by door.
This is if red and black are both switched, If not, black MAY be constant hot, and red switched. You could temporarily wire a light bulb/socket to verify switching.

Strat's response is correct, but a little confusing. You can connect fan black to either of the ceiling hot wires, and fan blue to the other one. Which wire determines which switch.
