OK, to have wireless, first your lap top will have to have a wireless receiver in it, so when you bought it, was it wi fi ready??
Assumig it is, most newer ones are. You will have to have a wireless router, which will require high speed interent, so it will not work on your dial up. So you will have to get a high speed internet, a wireless router and then you can have wireless interent at your home.
If you go to a "hot spot" in town, if your lap top is internet ready, it should normally just automatically connect
But do I need anything to connect into laptop when using it in a "hot spot" or just open it up and turn it on?Quote:

If it is internet ready, you will not need anything to log on at hot spots,
If your computer does not have wireless internet card you will have to get a plug in card. We have three lap tops, two of them have them built in, one does not.

Wifi is like a small 2-way radio station -- your computer uses it to access the internet
You need to be close to a wireless connection -- like a wireless router in your home
Howstuffworks "What Is WiFi?"
If you have DSL internet service -- you can buy a wireless router and connect to the internet -- wirelessly
Not all older laptops had hardware to connect wirelessly -- needed a plug in card with an antenna
Most new laptops have them built in -- just need to be enabled
Wi fi is basically a term used for wireless to the PC..
You can check out some devices like this one..

Hope that helps
