My home meating unit has a problem

After turning on the thermostat, the electric igniter lights up for ~15 seconds but nothing happens, no flames , and than it shuts off, and tries again 1-2 minutes later.

I've check the gas pipe and control that's in the 'on' positions.

Could it be a problem with the Control unit? How do I check?

Check to see if you are getting 24volts to the gas valve. You should have 24v at the two wires on the gas valve a few seconds after the ignitor starts to glow.
