Hi,

My toilet has been making a loud noise for a long time now - When its flushed, it sounds like a crazy hyenna sound. This sounds lasts for about ten seconds, quite a long time really. When I take the lid off the tank, it spews a single stream of water at me. So, I assume some sort of valve is broken, but I don't know what to do about it. Any guidance would be great! I read the entries on this site about flipping the washer over and such, but does that apply when it appears that there's a leak too?

See the refill tube between the fill valve and the overflow pipe. Sounds like that tube is missing or is not attached to the refill pipe.

If you have a different looking valve, one with the ball on the end of a rod, you should still have this tube.

Thanks Harold, and thanks for the picture. After I posted last night, I opened the tank again and took a better look. The water is spewing from a couple places on the Cap. When I flush, if I lift the ball, the noise and water stops. I believe I have this tube you're referring to... Any other suggestions? Do you think the spewing Cap is a separate issue from the noise?

No, I think that the cap is the problem. Sounds like its not on correctly. Turn water off at stop valve. Reach down under the float lift the float and grasp the shaft. This way you are both lifting the float and holding the shaft so it won't turn. Remove the cap by turning counter clockwise 1/4 turn. You should see that the float lever gets in the way if you don't lift the float. Reinstall the cap, assuming it is not damaged. Sounds like someone just didn't get it on right. If the cap is damage suggest you purchase a new fill valve (they are not very expensive) and use the cap off it. Save the fill valve for later use.

Footnote. I notice that you use the term ball, if you have the other type of fill valve (ballcock) tighten the screws holding the top or cap in place.

I have a similar issue, but when I take the cap off - it spews water even more than when it is on. Any ideas?

The cap is what prevents water from coming out the top of the fill valve. Of course it has to be in place. It has a couple of tabs on the bottom edge that latch on to the valve. Perhaps one of the tabs is broken. If you can't see what is wrong it may best to just replace the valve. Not expensive and easy to do. Just turn off the water, reach down the shaft and pull up the locking ring around the shaft. Pull old valve off. Put new valve on the old shaft, adjust the height and push locking ring down to lock in place. No need to replace the portion of the shaft that comes up through the tank bottom.

If your fill valve is a fluidmaster here is how it looks when you take the cap off see the images below, I am not sure if you can buy the top portion by it self it be best to get the whole fill velve assembly and replace it, good luck.

No John, you can't buy the valve with out the lower half of the shaft but you can buy a complete valve and throw away the lower half.:p:p:p:p

That’s exactly I was thinking of and I would suggest to replace the whole fill valve assembly instead of removing the half it is cheap and easy to replace see the image below, if you need help with the replacement please come back,Thanks.
