Parent as a dependent. Do they file for tax rebate?
I claim my mother as my dependent on my taxes.
Her only income is social security.

Does she need to file a tax return to receive the tax rebate or does her rebate
Come on my check since she is a dependent?

Your mother does not need to file a tax return. The rebate will come to her through the Social Security Department.

This is incorrect. The IRS is relying on 2007 tax filings to determine who is eligible. She should file, even though she may not owe any tax, and note that she is claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.

The followimg is quoted from Stimulus Payments: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

even if you are not required to file, you must file a 2007 return to get a stimulus payment this year. Low-income workers, Social Security beneficiaries, certain railroad retirees and those who receive certain benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs who normally don’t file may receive a stimulus payment if they do. The IRS will provide special filing instructions for those who do not otherwise have a filing requirement. The instructions will explain which lines on the tax return the filers need to complete.

Most of the answers are incorrect.

Your mother will NOT that the stimulus rebate check. You will also not get any additional amount for your mother since she is not eligible for child tax credit.

For more information on the eligibility and how much rebate you will get read: Your Tax Return: Are You Eligible for 2008 Stimulus Tax Rebate Payment?
