    On a regular civil law suit type payment garnishment, I don't think that they can get your federal tax refund. But if you owe for back child support, I think they can and they should if this is the case. Because it is your child that you are hurting by not paying the child support. But for the others out there that want a piece or all of your tax refund I think they are out of luck. I have a nephew that has an illegitamate child out of wedlock and he never gets a tax refund because it goes to the great nephew for back child support. I think this is exactly and appropriately fair to him.

    Actually, you CAN garnish the federal tax refund if you have a judgement from a state court and submit the request to the federal court system.

    But it is a long and expensive process.

    Can your Federal taxes be tookin/garnished away if you owe for overpayment of unemployment?
