    Harbor Breeze Cheshire Installation problem
Just bought the Harbor Breeze Cheshire fan today. I have been trying to install it all day long. The problem I am having is with the plastic locking tab. This piece is supposed to slide into the mounting bracket and hold the motor assymbly in place. It doesn't seem to fit at all. I can slide it in the mounting bracket without the motor assymbly in place and it fits like it should. I can also slide it on the motor assymbly shaft without the mounting bracket and it fits fine. When I put the motor assymbly on the mounting bracket and then try to slide the locking tab in place it just doesn't fit. When I force it as much as possible, it will stay for a few minutes but the "L" shaped portion of the tab is pushing the motor assymbly cockeyed and the fan blade mounts scrape the motor housing. It seems as if the "L" shaped portion is too long. Any suggestions?

Also the bottom part of the motor assymbly (the part with the chain pull and reverse switch) will free spin occasionally. I really don't think it's supposed to do this. Is this because I haven't got the locking tab in place yet?

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

I've installed this same model fan before, and I have no idea what you're talking about. Perhaps pictures would help.

Problem corrected. Blame it on poor eyesight and little bitty wording on the instuctions. I thought the slot in the ball was aligned with the tab on the mounting bracket, but it wasn't. When I did align it, the motor assymbly sat lower and the locking tab slipped right into place.

    Thanks.

And to help clarify one more point on this - you REALLY have to pull down hard to get the ball to sit down far enough in the tab in the bracket. This one took forever to figure out! Thanks for the tip as we had the same problem.

The problem is that you do not have the top of the motor shaft inserted into the mounting bracket properly. Make sure the notch on the motor hanger is oriented toward the alignment tab on the rear of the hanger bracket. Then you have to tilt the unit so that the notch side of the hanger slips in first. If you do this properly, the flange on hanger should be flush (no gap) with the bracket. If you have accomplished this, the locking piece should slide in OK. Note that it is a tight (firm) fit and may require a bit of pushing to get it in.

A boatload of thanks to Maji for posting this question and to "2crazykids" for responding. I was having the same problem as M. and 2CK's response solved it. As an aside, it's interesting that this little tidbit of info isn't in the directions. As a do-it-yourselfer, I've learned not to "force" things over the years, but 2CK is right, you really have to tug on this thing to get it into place.

Thanks also to these posts, as I lost the directions for installation and this also helped me install that component correctly.
