State Residency and What States to File in
Currently, I am unsure of what state I need to claim residency in. I currently live in Wisconsin (for 7 months), but I have not yet changed my drivers license or voters registration to Wisconsin (they are currently from Illinois). Can I claim Wisconsin residency?

Secondly, I made very little money this year (~$6000). The money was earned in Wisconsin (~4000) and New York (~2000 and no state income tax was taken from my earnings). I am going to file in Wisconsin because I will get a return, but do I need to file in New York and Illinois (previous state residency)?

You will need to file NY state for the earnings there and WI for the earnings there.

Actually, you probably do NOT have to file a NY state tax return because youdid earn enough money. Call the NY state tax to verify, but I am pretty sure about this. You may WANT to file to get any withheld taxes back.

You MUST file the WI income on Wisconsin as a part-year resident.
