Bad smell coming from shower after using toilet.
I just moved into a brand new condo and have noticed a serious problem with one of my bathrooms. After I "use" the toilet and flush it you hear a big gush under my sink. It turns out I have an Oatey sure vent installed. I compared it to one of my neighbors and theirs isn't nearly as loud as mine. Also when I flush, it sounds like the water is going through the shower drain, its very weird. Is this the cause of the smell? The smell can be described as almost a really bad mildew/sewer smell. That lasts for hours after it is "used" Please HELP!! Thanks in advance!!

Hi live... sounds like a defective oatey sure vent. Easy to replace... just unscrew and go to nearest home supply store and purchase almost any automatic air vent (A.A.V.) to replace.

Start there... if that does not fix... your drain lines may be clogged. But I doubt it at this point.

Do you think the sure-vent is the reason why I hear the water gushing through the shower drain??

I do... in fact, the sure vent may not be allowing air to enter as it is supposed to. This would cause the drains to be air starved so that the shower drain would gurgle/spit to pull air into system. It is why we install vents... and you just saw why first hand... smells bad/unhealthy when vents do not work right. Let me know how it goes.

When I flush and then put my hand near the vent, I can feel the air being sucked into it, its just really loud. But you think I should still try to replace it??

It is such a quick fix... unscrews.. right? It may allow air in... may not be enough air. Otherwise a drain line may be getting clogged. Let me know what you decide.
