GFI Selection for gutter heat tape installation
Is there a specific GFI device for use in wet locations? I have exterior outlets that I want to use to power heat tape on the roof and gutters.

    Thanks

GFI are most often required in damp locations or where you might easily touch a water pipe. You should install a weather proof box and cover for outside locations. Most any GFCI will work but check the amperage of the heat tape to make sure you do not exceed the breaker or wiring.

Deicing cable requires a 30 milliamp ground fault protection devices for equipment, not the standard 5 MA protection for personel.

If the deicing cable kit did not come with it's own GFP, then the only 30 MA GFP device I am aware of is a circuit breaker type. You will need to find a dealer/distributor that handles your brand of panelboard and have a breaker of the amp and voltage rating you need.

You may use the 5 MA device, whether a receptacle or circuit breaker, however, I assure you there will be nusinance tripping.

We sell and install heat cables for roof edges and gutters. There are some that have covers to shelter them from precipitation. You can get these at any electrical supply house. I have not seen them at the Big box stores. Good luck... note I have not had any success in using the thermostats. Stick with a manual switch!
