As you know, they are doing the amnio at 36 weeks to look for lung development. Did they tell you why they want to do this? Do you have gestational diabetes? Pregnancy Induced Hypertension.

If I know why they want to do this, I can help you better.

Okay, what will most likely happen is that they do the amnio to determine lung development, if not developed completely they will give you a steroid called betamethasone to help develop the lungs. They may send you home, or continue to give you the steroids until the lungs are ready for birth.

At 36 weeks, baby is pretty safe for delivery as it is. The earliest they consider "full term" is 37 weeks. So it sounds like they are doing the right thing for you.

They won't take baby straight away, they will give you time to call family and friends.

Yeah, they'll give you time to let the family know. It won't be like an emergency c-section so, they will give you time to prepare.
