Installing a tub/shower in a preexisting shower only

Yep, most rough openings are 60 inches so you need to remove ay walls down to exposed studs. This should give you enough room to twist the tub in at an angle with corners going between studs. Getting a helper is the easierst way.

Your post indicates that there was a shower in place and now you are putting in a tub/shower. Have you carefully measured see if the new tub drain will match the old shower drain? Most will not. If you were doing the opposite installation, tub to shower you would need a special shower pan to match the old tub. I have not seen a special tub to match an old shower.
