My boyfriend has a 6 year old son who is supposedly allergic to cats. We have 3 cats and for the last 2 years the child has had no reactions or breathing problems when he is at our house. We have an air cleaner and vacuum almost daily just in case... There is no custody in place yet but in the near future they will be going to court and he would like joint. The mother is now saying that she is going to get a doctors note stating that their child is allergic and since we have 3 cats (which are mine) that we are providing an unsafe home. Can she do this and will the courts actually look at it? Like I said he has never in 2 years had an problems with our cats. And now she's got the child brainwashed thinking he'll die if he comes back over... Any comments would be great thanks!

I turned up allergic to canines and felines, and the doc prescribed a series of shots; I was having chronic ear aches and sore throats. All of that ended with the shots. I would check out the "supposedly allergic" part because he either is or he isn't. Your boyfriend needs that info anyway. He should be able to go to the doctor's office and get a copy of the records.

She's just being vindictive about the whole thing. If the child has not shown any symptoms of being allergic to the cats it will be interesting just how she intends to "prove" that he is. Does the child sneeze, cough or go into asthamatic attacks in your home? Probably not.

Be sure his attorney subpoenas the child's medical records to be presented in court. He probably will if he knows the situation anyway. Good attorneys always subpoena all records so the judge can properly determine the evidence at hand. The judge will see for himself that the child has no allergy except in the mother's busy imagination.

My husband was allergic; the shots did not help him (he had no problem with dogs); he often didn't have any symptoms until hours later.

Also just for the time being and not that it's a bad idea anyway be sure if you have central heat and / or air buy the good filters. They are more expensive but they do work and that way they can't claim your contaminating the house when he's not there. Sometimes allergies aren't what we believe them to be. Some soaps that are used on animals caus alergic type reactions in some people and its not the animal at all. Maybe that's why around her friends cat he starts having reactions and around your nothing happens.

Thank you all for your responses. We do buy the good filters and replace sooner than the box says to. He has had allergic reactions to some cats , so she says, but that could have been anything. We are going to put him on shots just to make sure. Thanks again
