    J2 taxes
    Hi,

I came to US in Sep 2005 and working on a J2 visa since January 2006. I am also doing MBA since Sep 2006 and paying tuition fees. When I applied for tax return in 2007 I have been told that I can not claim my tuition fees. Can you please tell me if I can claim my tuition fees this year when I file tax returns this year.

    Thanks,

J1 stiudent for degree courses are nonresidents for 5 years. Nonresidents don't get tution fee deduction.
You will get exemption of $3,400 (for 2007) and deduction as per tax treaty between your country and the U.S.

Actually, J-1 student get the exemption for only TWO years.

The five-year exemption is for F-1 students.
