What phone... what service is the phone locked for... and to what service did you want the phone to work on?

I just bought a motorola e680i from someone and when I turn the phone on it asks for a unlock code.. I've tried all the basics like 1111, 123,1234,12345, 0000,000000 etc.. is there a master code or even free software that I can download to obtain the code or reset it?

An unlock code would be the code that the original owner had already implemented... kinda like a password for a computer. You should ask the original owner.

Rively74, I believe your issue is different than the OP. the OP wants to unlock from say, AT&T phone so that it will work on t-mobile.

What you're asking is that you can't even use the phone at all because someone has "locked" it using their own password.

    Did I get that right?

That's correct.. so is there a free software download that I can use to reset the phone and get rid of the passcode?
