I've had some old issues resurface and I'd like to get some professional help. I don't need a diagnosis or medications, just someone to talk to privately. I don't want to give my name, just basically come with cash in hand and sign in as John Doe. It has nothing to do with anything illegal or dangerous, it's just a unique situation where I really need to stay anonymous.

So is it possible to see a therapist anonymously? Are they required by law to keep records of ones identity?

I don't know truthyfully, but I do know I have never been asked for an ID at the therapist? Just make up a name, they probably will never know. I don't know if there are any legal ramifications for them or you, but I doubt it?

They can not give out your info anyway. I guess if you were paying by cash, you could use any name you want, but to be honest, just the desire to do this, shows you have more issues.

It will be up to the therapist, I don't know if any would see you on those terms,

They do not have to keep something's confidential. They are required to report certain crimes or such things to the authorities. They would disclose that to you at the beginning.

The confidentiality does not cover every single thing. At least not in Ohio.

I just want to reiterate I'm not trying to hide a crime or anything like that. I don't want to fool anyone with a fake name. I just don't want to give my name. It's a very unusual situation that I can't describe here. I can get into all that with the therapist, not here.

I'm just wondering if they are even able to see people anonymously. I'm trying to avoid having this type of conversation right off the bat, before I even get in the door.

Only if you are a danger to yourself or to others would a therapist have to report you. Since confidentiality is our middle name, you shouldn't be concerned about using your real name. We don't even gossip with each other about our clients. As someone already mentioned, your concern about using your real name is already an issue.

P.S. Yes, we can see people who wish to remain anonymous. You might be asked for your address and phone number (in case a session has to be canceled). If you have a cell phone and are willing to give out that number, the address thing could be waived. Cash over the barrelhead is okay too.

The most important thing about therapists is that they don't know you. They aren't biased on past situations, nor personally involved. It is important to be able to trust your therapist, so they can really get to know you and help you. I'm sure you can give an anonymous name, but your therapist has no idea who you are anyway and is required by law to withhold anything you tell them unless it threatens your life. Abuse, suicide.

Call a center where you might want to go, and arrange the appointment over the phone. Tell them what you are seeking. That way it will be set up before hand and you won't have to explain to any receptionist or in a busy waiting room...

Many areas have a first call for help phone service through United Way (etc) where they can make recommendations about where to seek services that you are looking for.

Probably ought to use some other name such as Joseph Bidlack (just made up) or only a first name, rather than an obvious John Doe that might perk someone's curiosity if they overheard it.
