Why is English a second language in the United States of America?
Specifically, what is the real reason for that?

As an elementary teacher, ESL is in the United States because we are a nation of immigrants. ESL is a program to help immigrants learn the English language. Children and adults who immigrate to this country need help learning not only the words of our language, but more importantly grammar. Unless you're 100% Native American, someone in your family and someone in my family moved here and probably didn't know a lick of English. It's really not until the first or second generation goes through school does the spoken English seem more natural.
