What are the first steps to getting custody of my children without the expensive costs of a lawyer?

If I am working fulltime, can I use a free legal aid service for family law custody cases?

Only legal aid can tell you what their requirements are.

You do not need an Attorney to file for support and/or custody in Family Court in many jurisdictions.

Each state and actually often each county in a state will have its various rules for legal aid. Some offer more help than others, only a trip to them will tell you what they will or won't do.

You can always represent yourself, but if the other party has an attorney you will have a lot of trouble filing the correct motions, response to motions they file and so on.

You need to look seriously at how you can get an attorney. Also what were the reasons you did not have custody or joint custody to start with, those issues will have to be addressed. And one has to show why the other parent should not have also.

Before I try to answer I'd like to know why you don't have custody of them now.
