When did the Internet become mainstream?
Okay a friend of mine wanted me to post this question (she has dial-up) so here goes:

When did the Internet become mainstream? In other words when was it made available to the public.

I checked on the Internet (ironic isn't it?) and couldn't find a definite answer, going by averages I'd say 1994/95. Does anyone know for sure?

I'd call "mainstream" (at least in US) when it hit 50% of households... and I'm thinking that was way after '95.

    ... just guessing...

Yes I can remember in college, there was one computer with three terminals for the entire college, Many of the professors though it was a fad that would never last.
