How deep do I have to dig to find the pipe to replace it and if it's close to the water main on a duplex to replace the pipe

Sorry lazosjr... I am afraid I really can't help with that... YOU will not even know the answer until you start digging... could be 2-3 inches deep... could be up to a foot deep (pretty rare any deeper then that in a duplex).

Start with where the pipe goes into the ground... can you see the hub of the fitting before it goes into ground... then probably not too deep... if not, then deeper.

And in terms of water main.. again.. hard to say... see where waste pipe enters ground... then look for the main drain line cleanout cover/cap by the foundation... then connect the line between those... that should get you started. Good luck.

Check with local building office. In this area plumber is required to record location of service lateral. Of course it may be easier to just dig up your front yard.
