What is the difference between itin and ssn?

If you are not eligible to get SSN and must report income, then you need ITIN.
For example the IRS will issue you an ITIN if you are a nonresident or resident alien and you do not have and are not eligible to get an SSN. This also applies to an alien spouse or dependent.
