I live near a highway that is almost impossible to cross (with a car) even when it's not busy. Someone has already been killed by and SUV because of carelessness while driving and judging from the debri on the street other more minor accidents have occurred. Since then a school has been built on the road next to a pre-existing elementary school, so buses and parents are driving there kids on and off this road everyday.

I was wondering what I would have to do to get the county or the city to put in as red light at this intersection?
Down the street a hospital actually had to buy there own red light but our neighborhood is not solely responsible for stuff like this, though it is dangerous. I want to try and make the city or county put in a red light without cost to those who live near this road and before someone else is killed.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I think with your department of transportation or your municipal or county building.
The DMV might even be able to tell you who you need to talk to.

If it's a City street, then only the City can put up a signal; same if it's a County road.

Depending on where you live the Police Department will give you a printout of accidents in the area and you can take that to the City/County, proving that it's dangerous.

I don't understand how a hospital can buy its own red light and install it - what would keep me from putting a light in front of my house - but perhaps it's possible where you live.

Another good arguing point is a certified letter to the City/County giving them the location and putting them on legal notice that it is dangerous and you want something done. That should get their attention - and help the next person who is injured.

You might want to start at the Zoning and Planning Dept and speak to them. The fact that there is a school nearby and all the extra traffic they just might have a red light planned for that particular intersection. Red lights are extremely expensive and unfortunately a few innocent people have to die until the community pays attention to the needs of the living. You may want to contact the City Planners about this situation and see just how they are going to fix the problem. You may also want to attend a public monthly town meeting in your city. You can call up the city or county where you live and ask for information about just when the next public meeting is being held and have a prepared statement you can read about why you feel that a red light is imperative at the location. You may also contact your local newspaper and point out this glaring need for a redlight as well. Sometimes the more people you talk about a problem like this, the more people will get on your bandwagon to fix the problem.

The DOT that is responsible for that road is the place to start.

By the way I doubt if the hospital bought their own red light. However, they may have been required to pay for it. For example, When a Target went up near me, their entrance had a traffic light put up on it. But that was a requirement for allowing them to build and the cost was footed by Target.

If the DOT doesn't help, check with your local newspaper or TV station. They frequently have someone assigned to be the squeaky wheel in such instances.

If the dmv doesn't help you, maybe possibly look into starting a fundraiser to raise the money to have the traffic light installed therefore no money out of their pocket. Just a possibility.

In my city to have something like this investigated we have to write a letter to the city council or contact or councl ward rep and they forward it to the traffic department. If I were you I would contact my city government they should be able to tell you which department would handle this.

The problem is that if they do not approve it then you have all that money and can't use it for the intended purpose and that can run into problems. It could work as long as they get all the permission/permits and so forth first.

This is probably less a problem of cost and more a problem of traffic flow - installing traffic lights in my areas takes (literally) years of examining traffic flow, accident reports, engineering studies -

I would absolutely get active in civic affairs and DO all those things everybody suggested.

What I would NOT do is pay for light that I'm already paying my city to install.
