    ITIN query!
    Hi,
    I am having L1 Visa and my wife is having a dependent visa. I want to know the procedure of filing an ITIN for my wife as a dependent. I have a few querries and would appreciate quick response on them:-
    1. There are many sites using which a tax return can be filed. Can I file a tax return using the option " Married - filing jointly" without my wife having an ITIN using e-file?
    2. After filing the tax return online can I apply for a ITIN at any ITIN office personally for my wife.
    3. After I receive an ITIN for my wife as dependent do I need to update IRS for the same for 2007 return.

    1) If you file jointly with you wife, she MUST have either a SSN or an ITIN. Since she does NOT have an ITIN, you must apply for one, which means the tax return MUST be mailed.

    2) You CANNOT file online without the ITIN.

    3) The IRS inserts the ITIN on your 2007 tax return as part of the process.
