Debt collection attempt 10 years old
I received a notice from a collection agency for a Wells Fargo bank account debt. I called the collection agency as all I could remember was that I had had a Wells Fargo account approx. 10-12 years ago, but know nothing of a debt owed to them. They called Wells Fargo while I was on the line, and I was told that the debt was from 1997. When asked why they are trying to contact me after ten years I was told that Wells Fargo just recently started collecting old debts because of a new "computer system". They said that they would send me the statement from 1997 showing the negative balance of $2,000. I would know if I had a negative bank account balance of $2,000! My question is, how can I prove that this information is not correct, and I do not owe them the money? Also, can they do this after so long?

    Thank you for any information.

Send to the collection agency a dispute in writing, and ask them to validicate the alleged debt. If you do nothing they will file suit. In your dispute ask them to verify the SOL on this alleged debt. Never speak to them on the phone, only in writing.
