    F-1 Student Tax Return
    Hello everybody.

I have a question to ask.

I'm currently in Indiana going to school for about two years now. (before I was in Utah going to school for 2 1/2 years)

Last summer, I did my internship at lisle, Illnois for three months.

Now, where do I have to file my state income tax & Federal income tax?

One more thing, there is always have a section that you have to check that you are resident somewhere. But I'm not. What should I do?

    Thank you.

By definition, since you are a college student who did not originally live in Indiana or Illinois, you are a NON-resident of Indiana and Illinois.

However, you STILL must pay Indiana state income tax on the money you earned while within the Indiana state borders.

Same thing applies for Illinois: you are a non-resident of Illinois, but you must pay Illinois state income tax on money earned while in Illinois.

As for the "resident somewhere" section, say that you are a foreign student and, if possible, list your home country.

You will need to file a Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ for your federal taxes; attaching a copy of the federal return to your state returns will answer questions before they are even asked. Also, attach a copy of the OTHER state tax return to each state return as well.
