Replacing a ceiling fan with fixture that only has black & white wires
I am replacing a ceiling fan and there is a red, black and white wire in the ceiling box. It appears the switch is connected to the black (top connection) & red (bottom connection) on the light switch. The ceiling fixture only has a black & white wires.
When I connect black to black and white to white the light stays on but the switch doesn't work. I tried to connect black to black and red to white but it didn't seem to work either. Can you tell me what the proper configuration should be?

I believe red and black are the hot wires and the white is neutral. Red and black together and white together.

I had the same question and thought the same thing, but when I put the Red wire with the black and white with white, still the light stays on... HELP... I even went and bought a new fixture, this one has black, white and a ground... Is it possible that my red wire from the ceiling is a ground and would prevent the switch from not working? AND the red should be connected to the ground wire? Would this prevent the switch from not working?

If the fan has two wires, you want to connect fan black to ceiling red, fan white to ceiling white.

If the fan has three wires, fan black to ceiling black, fan blue (or striped) to ceiling red, fan white to white.
