Could it be that your phone line is set to switch the caller to the answering machine after just 1 ring? I know my VTech has an option for setting the number of rings before it switches to answering machine. Or could it be that the call is being switched by your carrier to their voice mail system? What does the caller hear when he dials your number?

Thank you for your thoughtful answer.

    To answer your questions:
The system is set to go to answering machine after four rings.
I have no voicemail with my carrier and the problem does not occur with a different loan. The caller hears one ring and then silence

Unplug that phone, call your house, this will tell you if the Phone is the culprit, or maybe call forwarded?

I am having the same issue. People are calling our number and only hearing one ring then silence. I called the phone company and they said the problem was our phone. We unplugged the phone from the wall and called our number from another phone (Cell) and we are hearing the same problem as before. So this can't be the phone right? We should have just heard ringing with no answer.

Try unplugging at the connection outside the house, I have seen black/green corrosion on the pins inside the jacks cause this problem.
Unplug cords and look at the pins.
