I just got a daschund, it is 7 months old. She didn't have shots for the first two days, so I let her use the bathroom in the house the first couple days. Now I am trying to get her to go outside, but no matter how long I stay with her out there she will not use it and will use it after we come back in the house. Another thing, she will only use it in a hidden area (a closet or over in a corner), unless I am sleeping, I think she is afraid for us to see her... is that a side effect for her being scolded for using it in the house, and if so, how do I get her to overcome this and use it outside?

Start by reading the sticky at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251809 It will help identify when to take her out, although the timing will be very different for a 7 month old. When you take her out, keep her moving unless she stops to sniff. They can only walk and hold it so long. Females are also attracted to fireplugs and mailbox posts. Eventually she will have to go, even if she fears letting you catch her. Then lavish praise on her and perhaps give her a treat. It may take a number of times before she understands. Also, if she is enjoying the walk, don't go in so quickly she realizes why the walk ended.

Another trick that might give her a hint as to what you want her to do is to mop up her next indoor puddle with a paper towel and put it in a ziplock bag. Take that with you on your next walk and put it on the ground in what you think is a suitable place. Her own scent may help her realize this is an OK potty area.

All good comments and suggestions - but also be patient. Small breeds simply take longer to train them on being house broken. Signs... 20 minutes after she eats, take her outside to go - give her words like as a suggestion "better go" to help train her that it's time to go. Same thing with drinking water from the bowl or right after she wakes up from a nap - these are all perfect opportunities to practice that it's time to go outside and get the business done.

When she does go, in the middle (if you catch her) use the same command, "better go and good girl." Eventually if you are consistent - she'll catch on. As for her hiding - some dogs are just modest. Which sounds funny - but it's true. My female will go to the farthest part of our property and hide behind a tree - she does NOT want to be seen doing her business (can't blame her for that) and my boy, we're trying to get him to not be so lazy and just go where he wants to (no modesty or concern at all) but he's still young so there is still hope.

Remember - praise, praise, praise whenever she goes where she's supposed to (they want to please you!).
