    Intent to Defend
Would someone mind explaining what an "Intent to Defend" letter is? I just received a summons(8,000 credit card debt) on Thursday indicating I have 10 days to respond. How much time will it buy me by filing this letter? How can I obtain proof that I owe this dept? Thanks.

    Hello bb:

You don't have to get all lawyerese... If you intend to defend, send a letter with those words on it. They'll get your drift. Will it buy you time? No. You can get proof when you get to court. You could also obtain it through discovery, but if you don't know about sending your intention to defend, you're never going to handle discovery.

So, if you owe the money, and you know if you do or don't, and you have some cash with which to negotiate, I'd be getting to negotiate. Because after they get a judgment, you're going to owe TWICE as much as you do now, and with a judgment, they CAN collect it, and make your life realllllll miserable.

It wouldn't surprise me if you could settle this for around $3 -5 thousand clams.
