I am considering upgrading my electrical service from 100Amp to 125Amp. The service entrance lines are 1/0 aluminum. The distance from the transformer to the service meter is 64 feet and the service entrance lines are buried. Should I be concerned with voltage drop? Can I upgrade the 100 amp panel to a 125 amp panel? The meter is already 125 amp rated.

I am not an expert on this matter but I believe your electrician has to consult with the power company on this upgrade. Voltage drop should not be an issue but if I were going through the trouble of changing the main panel I would be looking at a 200A service.

I'm not interested in going to a 200amp panel because I don't want to spend a ton of money upgrading the service entrance cables to a larger cable. I simple want to get the most amperage out of the existing 1/0 aluminum service lines.

I understand better now what you are trying to do. I don't know all the requirements and procedures. I'm sure you will be hearing from the experts soon. Sorry!

Call your POCO, and find out if upgrading to 125 will be fine (I'm sure it will).

If your meter base is rated for 125, then you are good to go.
