Ugh I just need to vent LOL! My lab and my siamese cat are both annoying me so much! Both of them seem to be extremely jealous of the computer. Cat has started nipping me to get me to get off here, and Dog whines and taps me with his paw. It doesn't matter if I've been on here for 5 minutes or 2 hours... the pestering starts immediately! If I shut them out of the computer room, they scratch at the door and yowl and whine.
Lol, both of my cats are similar; either nudging me with their head and nose, nipping me lightly - or even trying to step onto my laptop.
Thankfully, though, after 2-3 shoves away, they plump down next to me knowing I can't resist giving them a scratching when reading.
Thanks Rick! :) My cat has a bed of sorts on the desk next to the monitor, but the dog is too big for that LOL. Although I do try to scratch his ears with my free hand while using the mouse with the other. :rolleyes:
Haha... I have the same problem! Whenever I try to use my computer, Caesar tries to lay down on the keyboard (he's the black cat in my avatar) and my dog tries to put his bone in my lap! Animals are funny... :D

I could make some suggestions, but my heart wouldn't be in it. There was a thread here a few weeks ago about the danger of addiction to this site. I do try to limit myself to threads where I think I might do so good, and certainly no harm. Still, my dogs don't seem to understand pushing on my elbow with their nose moves my fingers away from where I want them. In threads where I think people need to watch their dog more carefully, I sometimes suggest a short chain fastened to the computer. I used one more when I was using the old Mac in the other room.
I have made some modifications to the house to cope with a new puppy every year, plus having their friends and family visit. When my son passed on this computer, I picked up a new computer desk and made room for it next to the back door. I can monitor the door out of the corner of my eye for a puppy that needs to go out. I discarded the old carpet and put an industrial grade urethane on the hardwood floor. Such temptations as the houseplants* are in the living room beyond the gate. That also cuts access to the stairs and the rooms upstairs.
Peggy was such a good puppy. She always dumped the plants and dirt out on the rug before eating the plastic pots.

My husband and I both have computers, and we sit back to back together in the same room. When Annie, our lab puppy, wants to play she'll stick her nose under my mouse hand and knock it away from the mouse. Or she'll bring me a toy, a bone, a plastic bottle, etc. and push it on me. Most of the time, I cave, and play a game of fetch down the hallway while I surf the net. She alternates between annoying me and my husband for awhile before she decides she's bored with it, and lays down for a nap. We really like it when that happens. ;)
Awww... your puppy sounds (and looks!) very cute! Another thing my lab does while I'm on the computer is give me the sad doggy eyes. And if I try to move my head so I can't see his eyes, he moves too... they're pretty smart animals!
Give a dog a bone, and the cat some catnip then maybe that will give you some time on the computer?

I believe part of this is jealousy.
My housedog, terrior-poodle mix, comes up to me, sits down while I'm on the computer, after about an hour, and just stares at me! A few rubs here and there, and she will lie down next to me, and leave me alone. Sometimes, does the same thing when I'm reading the paper. She sometimes can't stand to be "ignored".
Being "addicted" to a computer doesn't have anything to do with it. If it did, what would you call doing a "work-at-home" job, say for 4 hours a night? That's not addiction, it's making much needed money, with the animal doing the same thing, wanting attention.
You might consider buying a type of heavy sheet plastic, putting it over the outside of your door, then just close the door, and let them paw at it all they want. They will soon give up and find something else to do; if you can tolerate the whines.

But I agree that it's a real pain if you're trying to do actual work or have an online business... that would be super annoying. I take Cuddles (that's the dog's name... LOLL) to the studio with me when I'm painting, and interestingly enough he doesn't get jealous of my easels. But the cat does, when I do drawing at home! Go figure.
Anyway, I was more venting with this thread than asking for help. I don't think they're EVER going to stop pestering me, and maybe it's good because it gets me up off the computer. I don't take as many stretch breaks as I should, and what with not being at the studio and staying home all day now... it's easy to spend way too much time here.
I can't imagine letting my dog scratch and whine on the far side of the door while I am trying to concentrate on something on the computer. Yes my dogs do occasionally decide they need attention, but in general I balance the time I spend on the computer with the time I spend with my dogs and the rest of my life. Of course, the puppy is privileged to go many places with me you can't take pets including when I was teaching in a community college. Still, the puppy allows me to stay on task at such jobs. My daughter usually takes her German Shepherd puppy to the office where she works as an engineer. She manages to stay on task well enough that she recently passed her professional engineer exam on first try.
I seriously have to question some people's priorities if their dog lacks attention while they frantically pursue the next little green box here with fluff posts. If you must keep the dog quiet while you work, it would be better to have it in a crate in the same room as you. Give it a Kong filled with cheese or peanut butter. You may not even need the crate. When it finishes the Kong, take a break. Take it for a walk, brush it, play fetch, a belly rub, whatever.
Since I have a life outside the net, I skip threads where I won't be much help to anybody. Where I do post, I frequently save time by pasting in material I have developed over the years, perhaps taking time to edit it to meet the unique needs of some questions. Most dog problems are rooted in a poor relationship with the dog. Thus I frequently start with this paragraph. Having a good pack structure reduces such problems. The dogs see all the

Gee, I hope this wasn't directed at me, because I spend lots of time with my animals. I take my dog for 2 long walks a day, and my fiancé also takes him for an additional walk in the evening. He goes with me everywhere in the car and to the studio. I started obedience classes with him this week and so we are together then as well. And I don't lock him or the cat out of the computer room. I mentioned in an earlier thread that he's only been whining and pestering me a lot more since I've been pregnant. And I also said in my earlier thread that it doesn't matter if I am on here for 5 minutes or 2 hours, the pestering starts immediately. I was also talking about my cat, not just my dog, and anyone who's a cat owner knows that cats, especially siamese, have a tendency to constantly pester you throughout the day anyway.
I am working on my new online portfolio right now, doing a lot of scanning and uploading of scans to my server. This necessitates that I be online. I have long waits in between each upload, and so it makes the time go faster if I come here to post. I don't really see anything wrong with that personally. Sorry if I offended anyone.
I doubt Labman was referring to you, Orange. You sound like you're pretty involved with your animals. I think he rather means people who will purposely ignore their animals just to post messages on the web.
Yeah you're right dae, it looks like there's a kind of mini-feud on the thread, not related to me. Blah I hate that though. I want everyone to get along!
