First time using a heat pump... winter season (Ohio), the blower continuosly runs. Thermostat never reaches the temperature it is set on. Example... set at 65 and house temp is 62 degrees. At times the back up (electric furnace) comes on but still never reaches what the therostat is set at and the blower continues to run. A technician stated the blower is set to either stage 1 or stage 2. Not sure what that is. Can anyone answer about the blowers always being on and what the stage 1/2 is?

Blower should be on only when the heat pump (stage one) or the electric furnace (stage two) is operating.

If the blower is always on it is possible the thermostat fan switch is turned to on instead of auto or the unit is running or the fan relay in the unit is stuck closed.

The thermostat is set to "auto". When I questioned the technician who was out last week he stated the blower constantly on was normal, whatever normal meant. In the summertime it would shut off after it cooled to a certain temp but not now when it is on heat. I wondered if the thermostat was bad.
I now have the thermostat set to 70 degrees but it only reaches 65 per the thermostat.

Can you supply the brand and model number of your unit? This would improve the chance of us giving you some useful info.

Do you know if this is water to air or air to air heat pump? If it is water to air, you may have a blockage or restriction in the water side. This will cause the compressor to stop, but the blower will continue without supplying heat.

I will check this evening when I return home on the model number, I do know it is a Rheem. Being a little dense on this subject I believe it is air to air... (if it was water to air would there be a water line going to the outside unit?)

Update: It is Rheem, model # is RPGC-049JAS, Volts 208/230 Phase 60...
I did an experiment tonight. I have the Thermostat on Em Heat (Electric Furnace). I turned the temp down below what it stated the temp was in the house. The blower shut off. The problem is the temp never registers what I have it set at.

It appears your heat pump does not keep up with the need for heat , either too cold out side or may need to check refrigerant charge, may be low or may be too small for your house. Normally you don't need to use aux. heat if temperature is above 32 degrees except when it goes into defrost. Good luck, Mike

I have had a Heat Pump for a few years now, but I am not happy because it runs a long time ramping up to the day time temp. Am using more power by using a set back thermostat? Should I set it to a closer temp between day and night? I set it at 67 in the day and 62 at night. If it is about 34 outside it takes about 3 or more hours to come up to temp. I have the unit serviced every fall and it is always in great shape.

More info on this... My heat pump has went out. The service tech stated I have no freon. He will have to do a vacuum check to determine if there is any leakage?? States this will take up to two hours and replace the caps. He stated hopefully I haven't damaged the compressor running it without freon and then will add the freon.

Another issue... as I am running the back up heat (electric furnace) the blower remains on. At time the elec furnace will kick in and blow warm air and then it goes off but the blower remains on. It never reaches the temp I have the thermostat set at. If I reduce the them setting below what the temp registers the blower will go off. The service tech stated that was "normal" but others have stated it is not normal. I am at a loss. The service tech states he cannot do the vacuum test/freon unless it is 45 degrees or more outside. I have to call him as it supposed to be that this coming Monday.
