What would cause a bent pushrod on a 18.5 hp briggs? Can I just replace rod?

Should not replace a bent rod until you can fix what caused it to bend. The engine could be so far out of timing that the piston hit the valve and bent the rod.

I would definitely do some investigating to see what caused the problem then repair as needed.
