Garage door chain/motor frozen in position
    Good Morning,

    I would appreciate your assistance.

I have a Lift Master, The Professional Line, 1/3 HP, Security + garage door opener.

Lately and on occasion, when activating to close, the unit would attempt but only move about a foot and then would stop on it's own. If trying, after a period, it would work for an amount of time (days or weeks). Now, it moves about a foot or two and comes to an abrupt stop and you can hear the motor straining. Of course it is shut off to stop that. I have released the door from the chain contraption but it is still frozen in that position. The motor is straining. It reminds me of motors of the past that would get something outside the motor that would prevent the motor from turning.

It would appear that I need some parts and pieces for it. Would you be kind enough to suggest what might be wrong and what I need to fix it. The unit is about 8.5 years old. We have no paperwork on the unit as it was accidentally destroyed by the original owner and builder of the house. I am fairly good at fixing things, would that appear to be something I could fix on my own?

Information found on back of unit:

    FCC ID HBW1127
    Part No. 41A5021-1D
    Date 05/99

    Thank You!

    Butch

You can order a rebuild kit online. I rebuilt one that was about 12 years old and that was about 6 years ago and it is still going strong. The kit is simple to install with a good diagram.
