    Cool air return
Hello. I have a cool air return in the family room which provides quite a cold draft when the furnace is off. The draft is so noticeable that I finally decided to put foil over it and tape it closed. I have 3 other return vents in the house in various rooms which I will leave open. Is it safe to seal off this one return vent in the family room? I don't want to cause any damage to the furnace, but the draft is actually causing the furnace to come on more often and leave everyone shivering. Since I covered it, the room is a lot warmer.

    All replies appreciated, thanks.

You need to find out where that draft is originating and stop it.. You should also insulate your ductwork if it passes through unconditioned space. By plugging the return, you will put more strain on the system and expect it to break down sooner and at an inconvenient time.

Yes, I will find out what causes this when I get a chance. In the meantime, I can't believe how warm the family and kitchen got from covering this cool air return! The cold draft was like an open window. The furnace is coming on much less. I know it's not good for the furnace in the long run though and I will deal with the cause soon. Thanks for the reply.
